The outdoor burn ban period in Atlanta Metro-Area is May Through October, but it’s always a good idea to check before burning leaves in your yard.
If your front and back yards are barely visible under mountains of countless leaves, it can be tempting to rake them up, stuff them in a big barrel, and set them all on fire to get rid of them.
Not so fast, City of Atlanta fire officials warn.
“The guidelines for outdoor burning within city limits is very simple,” Atlanta Fire Rescue Department spokesman Cortez Stafford said. “Residents are not permitted to burn leaves in the City.”
If you notice a neighbor burning leaves in his or her yard, please contact the City of Atlanta Fire Inspection Section at 404-546-7099. Someone will be dispatched to follow up on the complaint.
“[E]very now and then someone will burn and we will come out and give a friendly notification that they must extinguish the leaves,” Stafford said. “We will stand by until they do so.”
